It is important to remember that the sports listed are used simply as an example. There is an option for you as the teacher to change the sports used in order to suit the students in your classroom. The activities can be applied to any sport which makes it easy to adapt the lesson in order to suit your students' needs. The target audience for this series of activities is stage 3 (year 5 or 6). The reasoning behind this is the fact that this series of activities directly relates to the syllabus dot point of 'Games and Sports' for stage 3 students, which is:
GSS3.8 **Applies movement skills in games and sportsthat require communication, cooperation, decision making and observation of rules.
Timing is a crucial element for this web quest. You must allow the students ample time to research their chosen sport while at the same time making sure there is enough time for them to produce a solid body of work. This ultimately leads to how much time there is allocated for each lesson. For each lesson, students will be allowed 45minutes in order to research and interact with their peers and the teacher. Research stations should also be set up prior to the start of the lesson, this will save much needed class time which can be used for the students to do the best work they can.
In each lesson, teachers will have additional information which they have printed out to read to the students. This information will give the students a greater understanding about what they are learning.
For lesson One: The teacher will read out the background information to the students about the rules of sport. The teacher will also need to know the 'Universal' rules of sport incase students are unable to think of any rule or have missed any out. Be sure to go around to each station to check on each childs progress and research techniques. At the end, be sure to ask students to present their findings to the class and share their rules with others in order for them to compare results.
For lesson Two: Again the teacher will start by showing the class a clip of player responsibility on the court. The teacer can show this site as an example of player responsibilities:
Then show the students the next Youtube clip showing a sportspersons responsibility off the court. Once the students have completed this activity compare their findings and see if they meet the assessment criteria.
For lesson Three: Explain to the students at the start of the lesson each sport as different requirements. Begin by showing the students an image of a mapped out basketball court. This will allow the students to see how a basketball court is different to a soccer field for example. At each research station, be sure to have pictures of different courts and information about the size of the field and equipment for example. At the end, make sure the students A3 piece of paper is clearly labelled with the requirements so they meet the assessment criteria.
This webquest can be used in correllation with physical sport lessons. Once the students have learnt the rules, responsibilities and requirments of each sport, they can be incorporated into physical sport lessons. This will work especially well, seeing as the students have had a choice into what sports are used in the webquest and the research.
